Your Dog food is expensive. Wouldn’t it be great if you could just make your dog’s food at home? You wouldn’t have to worry if you were running low, or if you have to run out at night to go get some more. If you could make your own dog food you would never have to sit in the aisle at the grocery store reading over the list of ingredients. If dog food could be produced from your kitchen you wouldn’t have to worry about toxins or antioxidants. Oh if you could produce natural dog food that would be beneficial to your dog’s health it would be a grand and glorious day. But how would you create such dog food. Let’s explore.
There are three types of homemade dog food diets. The first diet is healthy, nutritious and made completely from your home. This diet is high in protein and balances all important components to your dog’s diet: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber. This diet also contains all the vitamins and minerals your dog needs as well. Well let’s be honest, the type of person that can achieve this dog food diet has both a great deal of money and more importantly a great deal of free time on their hands. I suspect this is not you. If it is, by working with your dog’s veterinarian you should be able to supply your dog with a healthy and hearty diet. If this is not you, however, we recommend that you not try.
Those who do try the all homemade dog food diet and fail miserably at it are the people that fit into the second category of homemade dog food diets. This category is made up of people that take both dog food and dog health lightly. These are the folks you see feeding their dog the excess mashed potatoes and gravy from their dinner, and the left over sausage and eggs from their breakfast. People who rely on this diet usually tend to be a little selfish. And by selfish I mean they care very little for their dog’s well being. These people also tend to be on the lazy side. They don’t take their dogs for walks and do very little dog training. This version of the homemade diet is a sure fire way to get your dog overweight in a hurry. Please don’t do this to your dog.
The third type of homemade dog food diets is the supplemental homemade dog food diet. For this diet owners/parents feed their dog commercial dog food supplemented by sources of protein and carbohydrates. These sources can include scraps from the table, but should not make up more than 10% of your dog’s diet.
We recommend the first group, because it is the healthiest diet for your dog. We understand, however, not everyone has this kind of time and money. If anything at least be a part of the third group. Don’t be a part of the second group. Caring for your dog means taking your dog’s diet seriously.
